Big Basin State Park
Thursday, July 4, 2013
The coastal redwoods once dominated the central to northern coast of California. Today,
far fewer that they were 200 years ago, some areas remain, pretty much in their original state.
Big Basin State Park is one such place, and despite being within a hour travel from Silicon Valley, has a magical
feeling of being in another world, quite far from high-tech civilization.
Part of the feeling of remoteness comes from the roads leading to the park, narrow, curvy, and through the Santa Cruz Mountains.
But the major part of this feeling comes from the redwoods themselves, their presense brings a kind of calming, grounded feeling that the community of redwoods creates.

The Santa Cruz Warf in the Distance
This little picnic site seems looks like it is slowly becoming part of the ancient redwood groce. The old stone
fireplace probably hasn't been used in years, with the stonework covered with moss, inside and out. On the picnic table,
is the MacBook. Much of this web page was written here, among the trees, in this grove.
The Santa Cruz Harbor is to the Left
To the left is the calm water of the Santa Cruz Harbor. This is the harbor that was damaged during the
Tsunami of 2011.
Seabright Beach
Seabright beach is in the foreground, and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is in the background.
Closer View of Santa Cruz Warf
The water is a great shade of blue today. The Dream Inn is to the right, it once had an image scanner on the rooftop that wasa popular image on the internet years ago. The Santa Cruz Municipal warf has a number of great restraunts.
